  • Harris is known as a nurse, a Civil Rights Activist, and mostly, as a leader in the Underground Railroad.
  • Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross but adopted Harriet after her mother, Harriet Ross, and her surname comes from her first husband John Tubman. 
  • Harriet was born a slave and raised in Maryland, where the lines between slavery and freedom were blurred.
  • Harris is known as a nurse, a Civil Rights Activist, and mostly, as a leader in the Underground Railroad.
  • The Underground Railroad was a network of people that offered shelter and aid to escape enslaved people to the northern part of the U.S., where slavery was outlawed.
  • “Stations” were safe homes where people could hide as they traveled, and the people that helped the slaves are called “conductors”.
  • After Harried escaped through the Underground Railroad in 1849, she joined as a conductor to help her friends and family escape. 
  • She led 19 different escapes and helped around 300 slaves to escape. 
  • She was so successful in helping slaves that slave owners offered a reward for her capture. 
  • Harriet also helped to nurse injured soldiers and helped on a military campaign that led to the rescue of +750 slaves for the north during the Civil War.
